Study: Smoking may contribute to suicide risk

Cigarette smokers are more likely to commit suicide than people who don’t smoke. The relationship has been attributed to the fact that many with psychiatric disorders, who have higher suicide rates, also tend to smoke. But a new study by School of Medicine researchers finds that smoking itself may increase suicide risk and that policies to limit smoking reduce suicide rates.

Expecting to teach enhances learning, recall

People learn better and recall more when given the impression that they soon will have to teach newly acquired material to someone else, new research from the Department of Psychology in Arts & Sciences suggests.

Schaal named to national food, agricultural research board

Barbara Schaal, PhD, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences and the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor, is one of 15 scientists from academia and industry named to the new Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the foundation last week.

O’Keefe named new head of orthopaedic surgery

Regis James O’Keefe, MD, PhD, a highly regarded orthopaedic oncologist, has been named the head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He comes to the School of Medicine from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The Campus Store, located in Mallinckrodt Center, reminds faculty, staff and students about Missouri’s sales tax holiday this weekend, Aug. 1-3. There is no state sales tax on computers, software, clothing or school supplies, up to certain amounts.
